Dato’ Ramlan Ibrahim received his letter of appointment as the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa, today, 4 January 2017, at the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya.

Dato’ Ramlan began his career as a Malaysian Administrative and Diplomatic Officer in 1983. He obtained a degree from the National University of Malaysia and a Master’s degree from Webster University, USA. Among the countries that he served in during the early part of his diplomatic career include Indonesia, the Netherlands, Croatia and Singapore.

Dato’ Ramlan’s first ambassadorial post was as the Ambassador of Malaysia to Bosnia Herzegovina from 2004 to 2006. He then returned to Headquarters to serve as Undersecretary of Americas Division and subsequently as Undersecretary of Southeast Asia Division. Dato’ Ramlan then served as the Ambassador of Malaysia to the Republic of Korea from 2009 to 2013. He then once again returned to  Headquarters to serve as the Deputy Secretary General for Bilateral Affairs from 2013 to 2015.

In April 2015, Dato’ Ramlan was appointed as the Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations in New York. He successfully led the representation of Malaysia during its period of non-permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council until the end of its term in 2016. His tenure as Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York culminated with the successful adoption of Security Council Resolution 2334 (2016) on 23 December 2016 on the situation in the Middle East including the Palestinian question which was a significant step towards progress in the Middle East. The resolution was put forward by Malaysia and three (3) other non-permanent member countries.

Dato’ Ramlan Ibrahim assumed the role of Secretary General, the highest executive post in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, effective 1 January 2017.
