26th ASEAN-US Dialogue: 2-4 May 2013

The 26th ASEAN-U.S. Dialogue was held on 2-4 May 2013 in Washington D.C. Senior Officials from all ten ASEAN Member States, the ASEAN Secretariat and the United States attended the meeting to discuss pressing regional issues across ASEAN’s political-security, economic, and socio-cultural pillars.

The Dialogue was co-chaired by the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs’ Acting Assistant Secretary, Joseph Y. Yun and Director-General of the ASEAN Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, U Aung Lynn. Malaysia was represented by H.E. Tan Sri Radzi Abdul Rahman, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The annual ASEAN-US Dialogue is a reflection of the strong and enduring relationship between ASEAN and the United States, now in its 36th year. The Dialogue also serves as an opportunity for ASEAN Senior Officials and the United States to convene and discuss ways to further enhance ASEAN-U.S. partnership.

The Meeting discussed a wide range of issues in the ASEAN-U.S. relationship, including maritime security, transnational crime, humanitarian assistance/disaster relief, the ASEAN-U.S. Expanded Economic Engagement (E3) Initiative, energy, education, rule of law, and development in the Lower Mekong Sub-region.

Malaysia led the discussion on Non-Proliferation and Rule of Law (including human rights, governance and trafficking in persons)

The Senior Officials also discussed preparations for the ASEAN Post Ministerial Conference (PMC) Session with the United States, and the first ever inaugural ASEAN-U.S. Summit scheduled later this year. The next ASEAN-US Dialogue will be held in Myanmar in 2014.


The 22nd ASEAN Summit will be held on 24-25 April 2013 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam under the chairmanship of Brunei Darussalam. President of the Senate, Parliament of Malaysia, YB Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang will lead the delegation of Malaysia as a Special Representative of the Prime Minister. The Malaysian delegation will comprise senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI); Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture (MICC); and the Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department.

YB Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang will attend the 22nd ASEAN Summit Retreat, the 9th Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Phillippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit and the 7th Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Summit. A Signing Ceremony for the Establishment of the Centre of the IMT will also be held in Brunei Darussalam on 25 April 2013.

The theme for Brunei Darussalam’s chairmanship of ASEAN this year is “Our People, Our Future Together.” The Summit serves as a platform for the ASEAN Leaders to take stock and review their efforts in realising the ASEAN Community in 2015; to conduct discussions on ASEAN’s future direction; and  to exchange views on regional and international issues. 



The 20th ASEAN-New Zealand was held in Wellington, New Zealand from 14–16 February 2013. Malaysia was represented by YBhg. Tan Sri Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahman, Secretary General of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia. The 20th ASEAN-New Zealand was co-chaired by H.E. John Allen, Chief Executive of Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade, New Zealand and H.E. Alounkeo Kittikoun, Vice Foreign Minister of Lao PDR.
